In archaeology, it is not always the most spectacular sites that offer the most astonishing historical discoveries. Tucked away in the desert south of Cairo, by the shores of the Red Sea, is the ancient harbor of Wadi el-Jarf. Hidden in plain sight for millennia, its walls and nearby galleries cut into the rock have been neglected, with archaeologists preferring to focus on its glitzier contemporaries, Giza’s pyramids and tombs.
