A symbol of prestige and a tool of power, Syrian horse racing long served the interests of the Assad regime, marked by corruption and spectacle. Then the war swept everything away, leaving horses starving, forgotten and sometimes abandoned. Today, a few enthusiasts are trying to save what they can.

The Syrian city of Homs is plagued by kidnappings and killings. The victims are largely members of the Alawite minority, and the motives appear to be sectarian. The situation remains volatile, with little transparency from the authorities and ongoing fear among residents.

Christmas in Homs
Who could have imagined that the statues of Hafez al-Assad and his sons would topple, that the yoke of slavery would fall so easily? We do not know, but I believe that God's providence covered us in mercy.
